Mocha with chocolate syrup on top

What is a Mocha?

There are different variations of this drink but the basis is a shot of espresso combined with chocolate powder or syrup, followed by milk.
A mocha is often described as a latte flavoured with chocolate because it keeps the traditional latte ratio of one-third espresso and two-thirds steamed milk, plus a thin layer of milk foam, but adds a dose of chocolate powder or syrup. This drink is sometimes topped with cream or cocoa powder.

Did you know?
The term “mocha” comes from Mocha, Yemen, a port city known for its exportation of high-quality Arabica coffee beans.

What makes this drink a favourite?

Mocha is a popular drink for several reasons. The main reason is the combination of flavours it offers. This drink combines the rich and robust taste of coffee with the indulgent sweetness of chocolate. The blend of these two beloved flavours creates a harmonious and satisfying taste experience.

Another reason why this drink is so popular is because of its versatility. It can be customised to suit individual preferences. For example, it can be made with various types of coffee, such as espresso or brewed coffee, and the level of sweetness can be adjusted by adding more or less chocolate. Additionally, it can be served hot, iced, or blended as a mocha frappe, offering options for different occasions and seasons.

This drink has a broad appeal to a wide range of palates. Coffee lovers appreciate the addition of chocolate as a delightful twist to their favourite beverage, while those who may find the taste of coffee too strong or bitter may enjoy the milder flavour profile of mocha.

Personal note: we admit we have friends who don’t drink coffee as weird as that sounds. But even though, they do not enjoy the taste of coffee, something they have in common is that they love the smell of coffee. And it’s interesting that they don’t mind drinking a good mocha. So if you have friends who are not that keen on coffee, we suggest you offer them a mocha.

Lastly, mocha pairs well with various baked goods making it a popular choice for those seeking sweet and savoury combinations. Its flavour profile complements treats such as chocolate chip cookies, brownies, chocolate cake or a plain butter croissant.
