Cappuccino- Origin and how to make it

The cappuccino is a popular espresso-based coffee drink that originated in Italy. This drink has a long and rich history. The drink evolved from traditional espresso preparations and gained prominence in Italy during the 20th century.

The origin

The exact origin of the cappuccino is not well-documented, but it is believed to have emerged in the early 1900s. Initially, it was a variation of the espresso that featured equal parts espresso, steamed milk, and milk foam. This combination created a drink with a balanced and harmonious flavour profile.

In Italy, cappuccino is typically consumed as a breakfast beverage. There is cultural tradition of not drinking it after morning hours. It is often enjoyed alongside a pastry or biscotti, providing a delightful start to the day. Why is it typically consumed in the morning? Not sure if there is a definite answer to this, but some possible answers I found: One is that it’s a heavy drink to have in the afternoon. Another reason is that years ago, in Italy, milk was delivered to homes. With the lack of refrigeration it made it difficult to store it so they would normally use the milk in the morning to make milk-based products like butter and cheese. And also they would have it for breakfast.

Today, the cappuccino remains one of the most beloved and recognisable coffee drinks worldwide. It has also served as the basis for many variations and innovations in the coffee industry, with different flavourings, toppings, and foam designs being incorporated to suit diverse preferences.

So how do we make this drink?

Crafting a cappuccino

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to make a cappuccino at home. We use our Sage barista machine but you can also make it using your prefered brewing method.

To make this drink you’ll need:

– Medium or dark roast coffee beans/ground

– Milk

– Sweeteners or flavourings (optional)

Steps:

1. Brew espresso or strong coffee: Extract one shot of espresso. Alternatively, you can make a srong cup of coffee using a coffee maker or any other preferred method of brewing.

2. Froth the milk: In a jug pour the desired amount of milk and froth. The goal is to create a creamy, velvety texture with dense foam. If you don’t have a machine, you can heat the milk and use a handheld frother or whisk to cream foam.

3. Pour the espresso and add flavourings: Pour the freshly brewed espresso or strong coffee into a cup. If desired add syrups of flavourings. Stir well to incorporate.

4. Pour the milk: Slowly pour the steamed milk into the coffee cup. The foam should be thick and creamy.

5. Optional: Add garnish or sprinkle with cocoa powder, cinnamon, or nutmeg on top of the foam. You can also garnish with cream or drizzle additional syrups for added flavour.
